Generative and agentic AI, with a clinician in charge
Two kinds of AI do different jobs in a diagnostic workflow. Aegis uses both, and a clinician makes the final decision.
Generative AI
Writes and summarises. In diagnostics that means a draft report or a plain-language summary of a result, ready for a clinician to review and correct.
Agentic AI
Carries a task through its steps. For example: check a recording for quality problems, run the analysis, and send the result to the right person for sign-off.

Diagnostic AI struggles at the edges: noisy recordings, experts who disagree, systems that lose connection, and regulators who need a full record. The team has worked on each of these.
Clinical medicine
Specialists certified in internal medicine, intensive care and sleep medicine, with more than 30 years of practice, hospital program leadership and clinical research that uses AI.
Medical AI research
Peer-reviewed work in clinical image analysis, including models that outline heart structures in ultrasound and estimate ejection fraction. Current work applies time-aware models to recordings such as sleep studies.
Data integrity and resilience
Experience cleaning interference out of national weather radar data and implementing a national emergency alerting standard. Both are systems that must stay accurate and available under pressure, with audit trails behind them.

From sleep medicine to other diagnostic fields
Sleep medicine is where Aegis is validating its first product. The same foundations carry into other fields, and each one needs its own clinical partners, data and regulatory work before a product exists.

About the Sleep Tool→Cardiology
The team has built models for echocardiography segmentation and ejection fraction estimation. Sleep apnea and heart disease are closely linked, which makes cardiology a natural next field.
Radiology
Clinical image analysis is a core strength of the team's AI research. Image intake, analysis and a draft report for physician review follow the same pattern as the Sleep Tool.
Cell therapy manufacturing
Cell therapy production depends on many measurements, strict quality control and complete records. Automating those checks calls for the data integrity and audit-trail experience on the team.
Only the Aegis Sleep Tool is in clinical validation today.
Architecture
Built to keep working when networks and conditions fail
Many medical AI tools depend on a constant connection to one central server. Aegis is designed around two ideas instead.
- Edge computing. Analysis runs close to where the data is created, such as inside the clinic, and not only in a remote data centre.
- Mesh networking. Sites and devices can connect to each other, not just to one central point, so data has more than one route.
Design goals
- Work continues when an internet connection is slow or lost.
- No single point of failure for the whole network.
- Suited to remote clinics, regional hospitals and areas with unreliable infrastructure.
If the link to the central cloud is lost, clinic sites stay connected to each other and keep processing studies.

Aegis runs in a secured, SOC-certified hosting environment. Aegis is also working toward its own SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certification, and toward Health Canada and FDA requirements for the Sleep Tool.

What does Ascend Aegis do?+

Edge computing means analysis runs close to where the data is created, such as inside a clinic. Mesh networking means sites and devices can connect to each other, not only to one central server. Together they are designed to let Aegis keep working when an internet connection is slow, interrupted or unavailable.
Is the Aegis Sleep Tool approved for clinical use?+
Not yet. The Sleep Tool is limited to validation, pilot evaluation and investigational research. Aegis is working through a Health Canada Medical Device Establishment Licence (MDEL) and FDA requirements.
